Dentists Concerned over Unsupervised Tooth Whitening
September 20, 2005 ( Halifax, NS) – Nova Scotia's dentists are raising alarm bells about the potential hazards of professional strength tooth whitening being offered unsupervised, such as in tanning salons and denturist offices. Dr.Grahame Usher, a metro dentist and newly-appointed president of the Nova Scotia Dental Association, is urging consumers to be wary of what they're applying to their teeth. "The strength of the concentration of peroxide, which is what whitens the tooth surface, is of concern," said Dr. Usher. "It can certainly damage gums and other soft tissue if used incorrectly. It's professional grade product, and in many cases much stronger than over-the-counter tooth whiteners." The dental association advises consumers to talk to their dentist before beginning any type of tooth whitening outside of the supervised conditions in a dental office. "Find out as much as you can about the product or process in question," said Dr. Usher, "and seek the opinion of your dentist before you try. Better yet, talk to your dentist about what tooth whitening options are available through the dental office, that way you can be assured your oral condition is being taken into account before proceeding." Dentists caution that bleaching is not for everyone and depending upon the condition of the tooth and adjacent restorations, other whitening options might deliver better results.
